FOG | FORM | FORMLESS (2023)

FOG | FORM | FORMLESS emerged over the course of a three-week residency at Studio H in Metchosin, BC on the unceded territory of the Scia’new First Nation. At the core of the piece are 12 specific logs I salvaged, the resonances of which I precisely measured, digitized, and spatialized into a virtual multichannel forest that was playable in realtime. All the material which makes up FOG | FORM | FORMLESS was generated and realized through engagement with these logs and their digital counterparts. FOG | FORM | FORMLESS also exists as a concert work in which 12 or more transducer-equipped logs diffuse the acoustic piano, and an iOS application which reroutes audio from the user’s headphone microphone back into the earpieces at low volume while the album plays to place the work in more direct conversation with the place in which it is heard. The album version was mastered by Stephan Mathieu at Schwebung Studios in Bonn, Germany.
